Bali 9's 2008

A small dedicated team of Tangs travelled to Bali on the weekend for the annual Bali 9s tournament. The touring party consisted of: myself, Butcher (capt), Smouch (VC), Stevo, Ox, Bandy, Clanchy, Craig, Jerry, Ed, Bellows, Max, Alf and Mitch. Accompanying the team was Cath Eddie and Hollie King as well.

After a great bonding session at a 24hour pub on Friday night, where only a few Bintangs saw their pillow before 2am, we had a relaxed start to the day with a 1pm tournament start.

We somehow had a very favourable draw, never once having to back up as was required by 2 teams. We started the first game a little slowly but finished strongly with a healthy 7 goal win over the Borneo Bears. In the second game we were 5 goals up at half time against Bali and held on to win in the second half by 5 points. In the third game we mixed it up, but still came away with a strong win against the Timor Crocs.

Enter the final, but unlike the previous meeting we didn't get the jump on the Cecaks, and gain an early accendancy, infact the opposite happened, where Bali got two goals early thanks to late starter Hendo. To our credit we continued to fight on, being only a few points down at one stage. Unfortunately we couldn't peg back the difference and went down by 11 points.

Everyone performed very well, and can hold our heads high considering we had a late withdrawal before the tournament from Andrew Bellows, in hospital from food poisoning, not alcohol poisoning (harden up), a life threatening knee injury in his first game with Timor to Craig Thrupp (that'll learn you for defecting), a couple of juniors in Alf and Mitch, a near first up starter Max and a near cripple in Stevo (amazing how nimble he's become in his wheelchair) all playing. Special mention goes to all the boys metioned previously for their efforts and performances on the weekend.

Lastly a huge thanks for Cath Eddie for your help this weekend, and to Hollie for helping run the water all day on Saturday.

Congrats everyone invloved, it was a great weekend, pity we couldn't bring back the silverware.

Update MJ coaching record: 5-6
